Course introduction and teaching purpose:
General Chemistry IA is a required cross-discipline course for freshmen in all majors, covering the chemical principles for atomic and molecular systems. The purpose of this course is to lay a good foundation for the more specialized courses of chemistry, MSE, and biology majors, and to inspire physics and EECS majors about the mathematical and physical tools that underlie chemistry. Early in the course, the classical concepts like chemical formula, atom, and molecule will be recapitulated from a macroscopic point of view. After introducing the basic principles of quantum mechanics, we will advance gradually from electronic wavefunction, the hydrogen atom, many-electron atoms, periodicity, diatomic molecules, polyatomic molecules, organic compounds, and then to transition metal complexes. As important branches of the atomic and molecular systems, spectroscopy and nuclear chemistry will also be referred to. This course is complemented with recitations (one teaching hour per week) and laboratory (three teaching hours per week). Prerequisite topics: • Analytic geometry: Master Cartesian & polar coordinate systems; projection • Complex numbers: Master their geometric representation, modulus, and argument; Euler’s formula • Calculus: Understand that differential means computing the slope and integration means computing the area; the concepts of differential area and volume • Probability: Frequency, probability & probability density, independent event, conditional probability • Mechanics: Master circular motion, harmonic oscillation, potential energy, momentum, and kinetic energy • Electromagnetics: Master Coulomb’s law in both terms of force and potential energy. Corequisites: Higher mathematics, general physics, and/or linear algebra.
